AI BDR definition

An AI BDR is software that drafts and sends first-touch outreach on behalf of a sales team, sometimes also finding the prospects and handling replies. The category is young; early tools drew criticism for low response rates, and most teams get better results using AI for research and a personalised line rather than whole messages.

If you run a sales team, you have probably been pitched an AI BDR this year. This page is a sober definition: what the term covers, what the first generation of tools delivered according to press reporting and analyst research, which steps of outbound AI does well, and the questions to ask before you buy. It names no vendors.

What is an AI BDR?

An AI BDR is software that takes over some or all of a business development rep's first-touch work. At minimum it writes outreach messages and sends them on a schedule. Fuller versions also build the prospect list, research each account, answer replies and book meetings into a calendar, with little or no human review in between.

The promise is headcount: the same pipeline without hiring reps. The risk sits in the same place. Every step the software takes without review is a step where a wrong prospect, a wrong fact or a message that reads as generated goes out under your company's name.

AI BDR vs AI SDR vs sales agent: is there a difference?

In practice, no. Among people, an SDR usually qualifies inbound leads and a BDR prospects outbound, though many companies use the titles interchangeably. Software vendors use AI BDR and AI SDR for the same thing: autonomous first-touch outreach. Sales agent is the broader term, covering any AI that acts on a seller's behalf, from research to CRM updates.

The useful question is not the label but the autonomy. Ask which steps the software does on its own, which it drafts for approval, and which it leaves to a person. Two products with the same name can sit at opposite ends of that range.

What has the first generation of AI SDRs delivered?

Less than it promised, according to the press and analysts. TechCrunch reporting from 2024 and 2025 quotes founders in the category acknowledging that early products had a pretty low response rate and relatively high churn. One sales executive described running an AI SDR for nine months that produced leads but no sales. The same reporting notes that cold email reply rates had fallen by half or more over two years, so autonomous tools were sending more messages into a channel that was already answering less. One startup in the category faced claims from former employees of customer churn as high as 70 to 80 %, which the company disputed.

Analysts expect adoption to keep rising regardless. Gartner predicted in July 2026 that AI agents will outnumber sellers ten to one by 2028, yet fewer than 40 % of sellers will say agents improved their productivity; the release draws on a survey of 210 chief sales officers. Salesforce's State of Sales 2026, a vendor survey of 4,050 sales professionals, reports that 87 % of organisations use AI and 54 % of sellers have used agents. Use is not the same as results.

Which parts of outreach should AI do?

The research and the specific line, not the whole message and not the conversation. AI is good at reading a lot of public information quickly and at producing one accurate, specific sentence. It is poor at sounding like a person over a full message, and recipients notice. Leadspicker's guidance is that native speakers of practically any language recognise fully generated outreach on the first read, and once they do, the message is finished.

The pattern behind the table: let AI handle the parts that differ for every recipient and are cheap to check, and keep a person on the parts that carry your voice or a live relationship.

Six steps of outbound. AI finds prospects, researches them and writes one specific line; a person writes the full message, answers replies and makes the call.

How do you evaluate an AI BDR vendor?

Ask for evidence at the level of replies and meetings, from customers like you, and find out exactly what runs without review. Eight questions cover most of it:

  1. What is sent without human approval? Messages, follow-ups, replies, meeting invites.
  2. Can I approve messages before they go, and edit the template the AI writes into?
  3. Where does the prospect data come from, and how is it verified before sending?
  4. Which mailboxes send, on whose domains, at how many messages per mailbox per day?
  5. What reply rate and meeting rate do current customers see, with the denominator and the period stated?
  6. What share of customers renew after the first term?
  7. How are replies handled, and who sees a negative or legal reply first?
  8. What happens to my data and my domains if I leave?

A vendor that answers the first question with "everything" and the fifth with opens and clicks is selling volume. Open rates stopped being a reliable signal once mail clients and security scanners began opening messages automatically.

What Leadspicker does

Leadspicker's guidance is to use AI to generate fragments, such as one personalised clause or an opening line about something real at the company, and never whole messages; the rest of the message is written once, by a person.

Frequently asked questions

Is an AI BDR the same as an AI SDR?

Yes, in practice. Vendors use both names for software that writes and sends first-touch outreach. What differs between products is how much runs without human review, so compare autonomy, not labels.

Which parts of outreach should AI write?

The personalised clause or opening line, based on research about the company. The rest of the message should be written once by a person, because fully generated outreach is recognisable on first read.

How do you evaluate an AI BDR vendor?

Ask what is sent without approval, where the data comes from, which domains send and at what volume, and for reply and meeting rates from similar customers with the denominator stated. Ask about renewal rates too.
