Trigger events definition

A trigger event is a dated change at a company, such as a new executive, a won contract, a funding round or a job ad for a new function, that unsettles the status quo and opens a window in which the company is more open to new vendors. It gives a cold message its reason to be sent today.

Trigger event selling is older than the signal tools that now automate it. Below: where the idea comes from, which events count and which of them are public, how long the window stays open, and how to turn an event into the first sentence of a message rather than a generic compliment.

What is a trigger event?

A trigger event is something that happens at a company and makes its decision-makers less satisfied with the way things are. Craig Elias, who set out the method with Tibor Shanto in the 2010 book Shift!, defines it as an event that makes a decision-maker dissatisfied with the status quo. His argument is that the first vendor to reach the buyer inside that window has the best chance, often before competitors know the window exists.

Jill Konrath built trigger events into her prospecting advice for sellers targeting large companies, in books published in 2005 and 2010. What has changed since then is the source. Events that once had to be spotted in the press are now published in registers and on job portals, and can be monitored.

Which trigger events exist, and which are public?

Most useful trigger events are public, and they come from four sources: business registers, job ads, news and social networks. The table lists twelve common ones with the window each usually opens and an example first line.

Windows are illustrative, not measured. Example lines are short on purpose.

Not every event is a reason to sell. Insolvency is a reason to stop, and a layoff announcement is rarely the moment for a pitch. The event has to create a problem your product solves.

Each trigger event opens a window of a different length, drawn as a bar from the day it happens. The line for today shows which windows are still open.

How long is the window after a trigger?

Usually days to a few months, depending on how many sellers see the event and how long the change takes. News such as a funding round reaches every vendor on the same day, so the window is short and crowded. Register and job-ad events reach fewer sellers and describe changes that take months, so the window is longer and quieter.

Vendor research points the same way. UserGems' 2026 benchmark across more than 350 companies reports a 45% lift in opportunity creation from new-hire signals and a 39% lift from promotions. It is vendor research on its own customers, not an independent study.

How does a trigger become the first sentence of a message?

State the event, then the consequence that matters to the reader, then ask one question. The event proves the message is not a mass send. The consequence shows you understand what the change means for them.

  • Before: 'Hi Jana, I hope this finds you well. I wanted to introduce a new platform for finance teams.'
  • After: 'Hi Jana, saw you started as CFO at Acme in March. New finance leads often inherit a month-end close that runs on spreadsheets. Is that a project for this year?'

Three rules keep it honest. Cite only what is public. Put the event in the first sentence, not the third. Do not fake familiarity: congratulations suit a promotion, but feel odd for a tender you only read about in a register.

How do you track triggers without reading the news all day?

Automate the watching, not the judgement. Pick the event types that fit your product, watch for them only on accounts that match your ideal customer profile, and have each event arrive where the team works, with the person to contact attached.

  1. Choose event types. Start from your best recent deals: what happened at those companies in the months before they bought?
  2. Choose sources. Registers for appointments, contracts and filings. Job portals for hiring with a stated reason. News for funding and acquisitions.
  3. Filter by fit. An event at a company outside your profile is noise.
  4. Deliver as a task. The event, the company, the person and their contact details, in the CRM or chat, on the same day.

Frequently asked questions

What is a trigger event in sales?

A dated change at a company, such as a new executive, a won contract or a job ad for a new function, that makes decision-makers less satisfied with the status quo. It opens a window in which the company is more open to new vendors, and it gives a cold message a reason to be sent now.

Which trigger events are public?

Most of the useful ones. Executive appointments, contract wins, subsidies, financial statements and insolvencies appear in public registers. Job ads, funding rounds and acquisitions are published by the companies or the press.

How long does a trigger event window last?

From days to a few months. Widely reported news such as funding rounds has a short, crowded window. Register and job-ad events describe longer changes and are seen by fewer sellers, so the window stays open longer.
