What is lead enrichment?

Lead enrichment adds company and person data to a lead you already have, such as a form submission or a row in a list, so you can judge whether it fits and route it to the right person. It is the umbrella term: data, contact and waterfall enrichment are parts of it.

Four enrichment terms are used almost interchangeably, and they are not the same. This page sorts them out first, then shows what an enriched lead looks like, why enrichment matters most for inbound follow-up, and what it costs.

What is lead enrichment?

Lead enrichment takes the little you know about a lead and fills in the rest. A form gives you a name and an email address. Enrichment adds the company, its size and industry, the person's role, the technologies the company uses, what it is hiring for, and a verified way to reach the person.

It exists because the data teams hold is rarely complete. In Validity's 2025 survey of CRM users, 76% said less than half of their CRM data is accurate and complete. Review sites such as G2 list the ability to enrich prospect or customer data as a core function of sales intelligence tools.

Enrichment works the same whatever the lead's origin: an inbound form, an event scan, an imported spreadsheet or a list pulled from a database. The inputs differ; the output is always a profile complete enough to decide on.

Lead, data, contact and waterfall enrichment: what is the difference?

Lead enrichment is the whole job. Data enrichment adds facts about the company. Contact enrichment adds a way to reach the person. Waterfall enrichment is a method for doing either, by querying providers one after another.

Lead enrichmentEverything needed to judge and route a leadA leadForm submission becomes a scored profile
Data enrichmentCompany facts: size, industry, departments, technologies, job adsA companySales team of 12, hiring two SDRs

What does an enriched lead look like?

An enriched lead is a profile with enough fields to make a decision. The example below starts from a contact form with two fields.

Illustrative. Field names vary by tool.

The last two rows are the point. The fields exist so that someone, or a rule, can say yes or no and decide who follows up.

A contact form with only a name and an email becomes a profile with company and contact data, a fit score and an assigned rep.

Two public studies show why enrichment matters. Validity (2025) found that 76% of CRM users say less than half of their data is accurate and complete. Workato (2026) found that more than 99% of 114 companies did not answer a lead within five minutes.

How does enrichment change inbound follow-up?

It removes the manual research between a form submission and the first reply. Without enrichment, a new lead waits in a queue until someone looks up the company, decides whether it fits and picks a rep. That wait is where most inbound leads go cold.

The delay is common. Workato's 2026 lead response study contacted 114 companies, and more than 99% did not respond within five minutes. Leadspicker's guidance is to respond as fast as possible once a lead starts interacting, ideally within five minutes.

  1. Form submitted: name and email arrive.
  2. Enrichment runs: company and person fields are added automatically.
  3. Rules classify: fit or no fit, based on your criteria.
  4. Lead routed: the right rep gets it with the context already attached.

What does lead enrichment cost, and when is it free?

Cost depends on which fields you add. Company facts read from public sources are often cheap or free. Verified emails and direct phone numbers cost the most, because they are bought from specialist providers. In Leadspicker, some enrichments are completely free and others cost credits; for example, email verification costs 2 credits (€0.02) and a phone number 50 credits (€0.50).

Two habits keep the bill down. Enrich company data first and contact data last, so you only pay to find people at companies that fit. And skip fields nobody uses in a decision. A field that never changes who gets the lead, or whether anyone follows up, is a cost with no return.

What Leadspicker does

Marketing teams use Leadspicker to enrich inbound leads and assign the right salesperson automatically. Classification on custom rules runs in a few seconds instead of the lead waiting in a queue.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between lead enrichment and data enrichment?

Lead enrichment is the whole job of turning a lead into a usable profile. Data enrichment is the part that adds company facts such as size, industry and technologies. Contact enrichment adds the email or phone number.

Why enrich inbound leads?

So they can be scored and routed without someone researching each one by hand. That removes the wait between a form submission and the first reply, which is where inbound leads go cold.

Is lead enrichment free?

Partly. Some company fields are cheap or free, while verified emails and direct phone numbers cost money per lookup. Enrich company data first and contact data only for leads that fit.
